“From Now On”

John 7:53–8:11 ESV
53 They went each to his own house, 1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” 6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”
John 7:53–8:2 ESV
53 They went each to his own house, 1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them.
—> The intro
—> Jesus is teaching in the temple
John 8:3–6 ESV
3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” 6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.
John 8:
—> What are they doing?
—> Jewish law says to kill anyone caught in adultry
—> Roman Government says the jews no longed have the capability to use capital punishment.
—> If Jesus agrees with the stoning he loses his popularity among the people and his reputation as this “friend of sinners”, plus he is defying the Roman Government
—> If he says no punishment he goes against the law of Moses
—> So what does he do…
—> Jesus bends down
—> He disengages from what they are trying to do.
—> it doesn’t matter what he does doodle, write sins, write their names, write her name, we don’t know that.
John 8:7–9 ESV
7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.
—> instead of giving them what they want Jesus gives them a challenge
—> “without sin” (anamartetos) —> The one who is not burdened by ANY guilt, shame, or sin.
—> Judgement, condemning people is reserved for God.
—> This isn’t about forgiveness and repentance, this is about punishment
—> This is a trap we all fall into
—> “well they got what they deserve”
—> “karma”
—> Jesus again disengages
John 8:10 ESV
10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

The crowd physically surrounded the woman in v. 3; now they have left her alone (καὶ ἡ γυνὴ ἐν μέσῳ οὖσα). The physical description anticipates the theological conclusion: the woman was surrounded and threatened by the voices and power of condemnation, but now she is free.

John 8:10 ESV
10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
sin steals our identity
sin surrounds us, traps us, and uses us.

Augustine’s classic formulation on this text is found in Homily XXXIII on the Gospel of John: “There remained alone they two, a wretch and Mercy

Jesus gives us a way out, gives us identity, and gives us a future.
But it requires something from us
John 8:11 ESV
11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”
Jesus gives us a way out, gives us identity, and gives us a future.
But it requires something from us…a change, a shift, a move
[P.T. Barnum:] I saw the sun begin to dim And felt that winter wind Blow cold A man learns who is there for him When the glitter fades and the walls won't hold 'Cause from that rubble what remains Can only be what's true If all was lost There's more I gained 'Cause it led me back to you
From now on These eyes will not be blinded by the lights From now on What's waited 'til tomorrow starts tonight Tonight Let this promise in me start Like an anthem in my heart From now on From now on

I drank champagne with kings and queens The politicians praised my name But those were someone else's dreams The pitfalls of the man I became For years and years I chased their cheers A crazy speed of always needing more But when I stop And see you here I remember who all this was for
And from now on These eyes will not be blinded by the lights From now on What's waited 'til tomorrow starts tonight It starts tonight And let this promise in me start Like an anthem in my heart From now on From now on From now on
